Who enrolls in the MAET Program?
We have a wide range of students who apply to the program. Our students are teachers, administrators, instructional designers, higher education professionals, and corporate educators at all stages of their professional careers. Wondering if our program will meet your professional needs? Please email us at askmaet@msu.edu.
Can I earn the degree through summer and online courses only?
Yes.
Is the program expensive?
Degree programs at MSU cost more per credit, but require fewer total credits (30 compared to 36-38 credits for other programs), evening out some cost differences. A degree from MSU offers candidates a highly regarded, nationally recognized, and portable degree.
Are scholarships or assistantships available?
To support you, we have curated a list of funding opportunities for you to explore as you consider scholarship, grant, fellowship, and assistantships to fund your MAET experience.
I graduated from MSU’s Teacher Preparation Program (TPP). How many of my TPP courses are accepted?
During MSU’s TPP internship year, you completed several courses that are eligible for use toward a Master of Arts degree inside the College of Education. The Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program has agreed to count a maximum of 9 credits of the graduate coursework from your MSU internship year toward your MAET degree.
Master’s students are required to complete their degree within 5 years. A student’s academic clock starts based on the first course taken toward the degree. The eligibility of a course to be used toward a degree is based on how well the content in the course aligns with the degree granting program. We do not accept all of the courses because some do not apply to the themes and threads of the MAET. If you plan to use your internship course credits toward your MAET degree, please discuss this with your academic advisor when building your academic plan. If you have questions before you apply about whether specific TPP courses are accepted, please contact an MAET academic advisor.
Can I transfer courses from other universities?
The Master of Arts in Educational Technology program allows students to transfer a maximum of 9 credits (in the form of three 3-credit courses) if they meet the following criteria:
- From a postsecondary accredited institution of comparable academic quality (including other programs at MSU)
- Are appropriate to a student’s MAET program
- Were completed within the time limits approved for the earning of the degree desired at Michigan State University
- A 3.0 grade or its equivalent was received in the course
If you wish to transfer courses into MAET, please indicate this on your department application and include a description of each course. High-quality, graduate-level courses that fit your professional goals may be transferred in upon evaluation and approval by the MAET program.
How long will it take me to earn my master’s degree?
A majority of students complete the program in 2 years while working full time. Your MAET academic advisor will work with you to build a schedule (academic plan) that best suits your professional and personal needs. There is a 5-year limit for completion of all courses in the master’s program, including transfer courses.
When is the due date for applying?
The MAET program has a rolling admissions process. Applications will be considered up to one month before the beginning of courses.
I am an international student, and am interested in your program. Does it qualify me for a student visa?
No. Our courses are offered fully online, and therefore residency in the US is not required to complete the MAET program. If you are an international applicant interested in the program, please note that the MAET program does not fulfill the academic requirements to apply for a J-1 visa. MAET courses during the fall and spring semesters are completely online, thus, admission to the MAET program would not qualify you for a student visa.
