Dr. Steiner-Khamsi will present a talk entitled “Standards are Good for Business: Standardized Comparison and the Private Sector in Education.” Her current research in comparative education examines how and why the method of comparison against standards has benefited non—state actors and businesses in the education sector. In the discussion, she will highlight a few prominent features of reform packages that are sold or transferred from one country to another and discuss the role of standardized comparison, global benchmarking, and impact evaluations for the dissemination of these packages. She will propose insights into why policy actors buy into commercial reform packages, as well as how they justify doing so. Dr. Steiner-Khamsi uses an interpretive framework of policy borrowing and lending to explain the rise of the education industry in the international arena. Dr. Avner Segall will respond to the presentation and share his thoughts on this work. A moderated discussion will follow. Light refreshments will be served.

Here are some documents from Dr. Steiner-Khamsi’s talk: Manuscript, and Dr. Segall’s comments.
