Daniel Gould, professor of kinesiology and director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University, has been invited to serve on the Science Board of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Gould joins fellow Department of Kinesiology faculty members Karin Pfeiffer, who is currently on the board, and James Pivarnik, who completed his term in December 2013.

The Science Board was formed to ensure the messages and programs of the council are scientifically sound. Members, who include researchers, scientists and physicians, advise the council and provide recommendations in the areas of program development and evaluation.

According to the Science Board, Gould was selected to serve “due to the significant contributions he has made to the research and science of youth sports and social determinants.”

Gould has multiple areas of expertise, including mental training for athletic competition and sport psychology, with particular focuses on family, community and schools. He has been a consultant to the U.S. Olympic Committee and the United States Tennis Association, among other organizations. Earlier this year, he received MSU’s prestigious Outreach Scholarship Community Partnership award for his work with the Detroit Police Athletic League (Detroit PAL) through the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports.

His appointment begins in January 2014 and will continue for three years.
