Hybrid Instruction in Three Locations

We have purposefully chosen to use a hybrid approach that blends face-to-face as well as online sessions in both synchronous (meeting during scheduled times) and asynchronous (independent work completed flexibly during the week) formats as opposed to having completely online coursework. This approach allows us to both accomodate practicing educators while simultaneously doing the following:

  • Build a strong community of learners;
  • Ensure rigorous, high-quality, and collaborative learning experiences;
  • Network and build social capital with colleagues across Michigan and beyond;
  • Learn from peers in diverse contexts and schools;
  • Foster relationships between students and faculty.

To accommodate practioners in different parts of the state, our Master of Arts in K-12 Educational Administration is available in three locations: on MSU’s main campus in East Lansing, at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Michigan, and at the MSU Detroit Center.

East Lansing

The K-12 EAD masters program on the MSU campus in East Lansing has traditionally been a totally face-to-face program. Faculty of the MA courses have come to realize the benefits of hybrid instruction for their adult learners and so the on campus program offers all program courses in hybrid or online format. This move intends to utilize exciting new learning technologies and to make graduate studies more convenient for more students. The hybrid course format for core courses combines face to face meetings with online learning activities.

The masters program involves 21 credits of core studies and 9 credits of elective studies. Core studies are taught as an integrated sequence though the semesters when particular courses are offered sometimes vary. (East Lansing program plan)

Birmingham

The K-12 EAD masters program located in Birmingham, Michigan has been highly attractive to working educational professionals in a broad geographic region. Program faculty have sought to move the core of the MA program to a hybrid online environment in order to utilize exciting new learning technologies and to make graduate studies more convenient for more students. The hybrid course format for core courses combines face to face meetings with online learning activities.

We maintain the same fall schedule, with EAD 806 and EAD 811 meeting on the same night every 2-4 weeks at our Birmingham location at Seaholm High School. EAD 812 is taught in the same format.

Detroit

We continue to develop the K-12 Educational Administration masters program in Detroit, at the MSU Detroit Center located at 3408 Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Our Detroit program includes the same course requirements as our two existing programs in East Lansing and Birmingham, but integrates an urban focus by attending to issues of particular importance for urban school leaders. Among the issues integrated into the coursework will be strategies for dealing with high-stakes accountability in low-performing schools, creating change in a large district, implementing and leading dropout prevention efforts, and working with specific populations of students who are enrolled in urban schools in high numbers including English language learners, low-income students, and students of color. Courses will also address tools for responding to student and family needs and establishing community partnerships.

These courses will be offered in face-to face, online and hybrid (partly face-to-face and partly online) formats. All courses meet in the evenings to accommodate the working schedules of students.
