What is the Online Chinese Program?
Cooperating with the Michigan Virtual (MV), a non-profit online education and training corporation funded by the Michigan Legislature in July 2000, we offer online Chinese courses to secondary school students using interactive teaching methods and highly qualified instructors of native speakers of Chinese.

What Online Chinese Courses Are Offered?
Currently, we offer Mandarin Chinese 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, AP (A & B) courses through Michigan Virtual. These courses start at the novice level and continue to the AP-level courses.
What Are Our Online Course Formats?
Our online courses consist of both students self-studying the interactive daily learning tasks and students attending weekly synchronous lab sessions to elaborate on and clarify their independent learning experience. The course format is (a) four-day self-study and submission of daily assignments to Brightspace (Learning Management System) and (b) one mandatory lab session (synchronous) which is taught by highly qualified instructors who are native speakers of Chinese. Thus, the courses capitalize on the advantages of both the technologies and human instructors for language learning.

AP Chinese
Online AP Chinese Course
AP Chinese (A and B) course is an advanced course specifically designed for students who have completed four to five years of Chinese language learning and for Chinese heritage students. The course format involves four-day asynchronous learning on Brightspace and one synchronous 50-minute lab session on Zoom per week with instructors who are native speakers of Chinese.

Course Descriptions:
Level A: available ONLY in Fall Semester
This course is designed for students who have completed four to five years of Chinese, or have equivalent proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. At this level, students continue to develop their Chinese vocabulary and understanding of grammar, and will be guided to pay more attention to formal language use in authentic situations. The Chinese language forms and cultural knowledge will be integrated into the activities of listening, reading, speaking and writing. Students are expected to understand the spoken language (short dialogue, statement and linguistic exchange), identify structurally and logically correct structures and identify the main/supporting ideas, themes and settings of a passage written in Chinese characters. The course aims at preparing students to take AP Chinese test. This course will be taught by a native Chinese instructor who has rich experiences in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. A mandatory weekly synchronous lab session is emphasized to enhance real-time student-instructor and student-student interaction.
Level B: available ONLY in Spring Semester
This course is designed for students who have completed AP Level A Chinese course. At this level, students continue to further their Chinese language skills by engaging in integrated activities of listening, reading, speaking and writing/typing. Students are expected to comprehend both the spoken and written Chinese language at the article-level. In addition, they are expected to synthesize and comment on the texts they have read orally or in written forms. Students will continue to practice and prepare for AP Chinese test. This course will be taught by a native Chinese instructor who has rich experiences in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. A mandatory weekly synchronous lab session is emphasized to enhance real-time student-instructor and student-student interaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are the online Chinese courses certified?
A: Yes. Michigan Virtual (MV) is AdvancED accredited and a large number of courses are approved by the NCAA.
Q: How is the online Chinese course delivered? What does a typical online Chinese course look like?
A: The online Chinese course is delivered through a “4+1 model” per week. The 4 means there are four days of assignments, and the 1 refers to an online synchronous lab session with your instructor and classmates. A typical online Chinese course for one semester contains 20 weeks of lessons across different themes, two (or more) quizzes and a final exam. Multiple language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) are developed throughout the course. The final exam will need to be proctored. The course descriptions and your instructor will let you know what is expected of you.
Q: What levels do we offer?
A: We offer levels from beginning to intermediate (1A-4B), and AP Chinese course.
Q: Can the students earn high school credits?
A: It is the student’s school who ultimately decides on the amount of credit granted. Credit is awarded by your school, not MV or us.

Q: How can the students pass this course and stand out?
A: Students are expected to log in daily and complete assignments by the dates outlined in the course syllabus and pacing guide. This typically requires at least one to two hours of work per day. Students have greater freedom and schedule flexibility in an online course than in a traditional classroom, so they must be ready to assume more responsibility for their own progress and exhibit a high level of discipline and drive. They also must have good communication skills so they can do well in the lab sessions and also receive help from their instructor when needed.

2023 MSU NCTA Workshop Teaching about Asia Series
Sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) and the Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University (MSU), we will offer two workshops for K-12 educators with a focus on contemporary East Asian art.

Contemporary East Asian Art: Living in Place.
Join the NCTA at Michigan State University for a program that will bring educators together in close conversation around artworks by Chinese artist Guanyu Xu and Korean artist Won Kim. Designed to encourage dialogue around global issues, this program will continue to expand on ways of knowing about and understanding art. Participants can attend one or both of the workshops, but registration is required. Michigan teacher can receive SCECH professional development for the program. Attendees of the August 9 program will receive complimentary materials and books. Guanyu Xu will join the Zoom session on August 16.

Dr. Jiahang Li is an Assistant Professor at the College of Education, Michigan State University. He oversees an online Chinese program designed for secondary level students in the U.S. With a Ph.D. in Reading education from University of Maryland College Park, his research interests include educational technology, social media, online language teaching and learning, and world language teacher education. He has published many book chapters and journal articles and serves as editorial board members and reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals, including Computers & Education, Educational Researcher, and Foreign Language Annals.

Guanyu Xu’s work provides a unique opportunity for educators to consider many ways an environment can be reimagined to create freedom from oppression. As educators often work within prescribed environments, we will explore ways to disrupt classroom environmental norms to be more inclusive and celebratory of students’ lived experiences.
He received international recognition through his 2018 series Temporarily Censored Home, in which he photographed temporary photography installations inside his parents’ home in Beijing. Working from his perspective as a Chinese gay man from a conservative family, his work explores relationships between personal freedom and politics through the power of photography and installation. His more recent work includes an ongoing series Resident Aliens, which will be featured at the MSU Broad Art Museum from June 10-Dec 17, 2023.

Open Educational Resources (OER) for Teaching about Asia and Chinese Language and Culture
Workshop 1: June 18, 2022, 10am-12pm EDT
The first workshop targets on K-12 Chinese language teachers. Presenters will share the OER they have developed in collaboration with researchers and Chinese language teachers based upon authentic Chinese children’s picture books. Through Users’ Guides, instructional videos, audio books, and other resources, participants will learn the pedagogical principles and practical strategies to create more resources contributing to Chinese language and culture teaching and OER.
Workshop 2: August 13, 2022, 10am-12pm EDT
The second workshop aims at all K-12 teachers who are interested in using OER to teach. Participants will explore more OER related to teaching about Asia. They will discuss what teaching about Asia encompasses while exploring existing resources which may benefit their classroom teaching. They will deepen their understanding of the elements and design process related to accessing and creating more OER content for teaching about Asia.

Dr. Jiahang Li is an Assistant Professor at the College of Education, Michigan State University. Dr. Shuhan Wang
Dr. Shuhan Wang is President of ELE Consulting International, LLC and Director of the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network (CELIN) at Asia Society. She is former Deputy Director of the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland, Co-Principal Investigator for STARTALK project, Executive Director of Chinese Language Initiatives at Asia Society, and Education Associate for World Languages and International Education at the Delaware Department of Education. Dr. Wang taught in K-12 schools, university Chinese language programs, a Chinese heritage language school, and teacher training programs. In addition to authoring several textbook series for K-12 students, she has written extensively on language planning and policy, teacher education and development, and curriculum and biliteracy development. She is an advisor to the Ministry of Education of Singapore, providing consultation and professional development for staff and teachers, and designing and creating the primary and secondary Chinese as Mother Tongue curriculum and textbook. Dr. Wang received her BA from National Taiwan University, an MA in Communication from Ohio State University, and a second MA in Bilingualism/TESOL from the University of Delaware. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mengyao Chen
Mengyao Chen is an instructor of the online Chinese program at the College of Education, Michigan State University. Mengyao is an educator and researcher with a background in K-12 and university programs. She received a Master of Education degree in Second Language Education from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, as well as teaching licenses in both Minnesota and Michigan. Her research interests include the preparation and training of Chinese immersion teachers and developing open educational resources. She has published her work and serves as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Education. She also presented at international and national conferences, such as the Asian Conference on Education & International Development, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and the National Chinese Language Conference.

Chengzhi Chu teaches Chinese language and linguistics at the University of California, Davis, and serves on its Graduate Faculty of Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. He is also a Guest Professor or Honorable Professor at six universities and a former President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA. His many publications span areas of Chinese linguistics, cognitive semantics, corpus linguistics, Chinese L2 pedagogy, technology in Chinese teaching, and intercultural communication.

Topic: Sound-Driven Typing: Empowering Sustainable Hanzi Learning and Proficiency Development
Phyllis Zhang (张霓) teaches Chinese at George Washington University (GWU), Washington, DC. Her expertise lies in applied linguistics, with a focus on technology-enhanced language learning, instructional design, and textbook development. Her research interests include pedagogical grammar as well as L2 Chinese proficiency development and assessment.
Ninghui Liang
Topic: Unlocking the Power of E-Writing: Enhancing Chinese Language Instruction at the Intermediate Level
Ninghui Liang is a Senior Lector II in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University, where she has been teaching Chinese since 2002. From 2016 to 2020, she served as the coordinator of the Chinese Language Program. Currently, she serves as a board director of the Chinese Language Teachers Association in the US and is a certified ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview Tester. Her research interests include the integration of technology into language curriculum, language pedagogy, intercultural competence, and task-based language learning.

Qian Wang (王蒨) is an Associate Professor of Teaching and the Director of Chinese Language Program in the Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. Qian’s research interests include language program curriculum development and renewal and project-based language learning. Her most recent projects include aligning Learning Outcomes with assessments in language courses and language program Indigenization.
Hsiang-ning Wang (王祥寧) is an Associate Professor of Teaching and the Coordinator of Chinese Language Program in the Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. Hsiang-ning’s research interests include Chinese language curriculum and pedagogy innovation, teaching and learning of heritage speakers and teacher training, as well as community-based and service learning.
Matt Coss
Topic: Writing Assessment in the E-Writing Approach: Research and Practice
Matt Coss is a PhD student in Second Language Studies at Michigan State University. He has taught Spanish and Mandarin to students from age 3 to age 80 from Novice to Superior proficiency levels in elementary school, secondary school, and university contexts for 12 years. Matt holds a Masters degree in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Maryland and a BA in Hispanic Linguistics and Chinese. Matt’s research focuses on the connections between research and practice, with particular focus on task-based language teaching and assessment, language program design and evaluation, and educational psychology.

Dr. Chengzhi Chu is an Associate Professor of Chinese at the University of California at Davis, where he coordinates its Chinese Language Program and serves on the Graduate Faculty of Linguistics. He is the former President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA, and Guest Professor or Honorable Professor of several other universities. His publications cover a wide range of topics in Chinese linguistics (grammar, lexicon, writing system, and dialect), cognitive semantics, corpus linguistics, Chinese L2 pedagogy, application of technology in Chinese teaching, and intercultural communication. In his fields, he has delivered more than one hundred lectures, conference keynote or plenary talks, and workshop presentations in the United States, Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and England.

The 6th Online Chinese Teaching Forum & Workshop
The College of Education at Michigan State University is pleased to announce that our 6th Annual Online Chinese Teaching Forum & Workshop (OCTFW) and the Annual Conference for CLAM: Chinese Language Associate of Michigan sponsored by Wayne State University will be co-hosted on November 14th, 2020. Building on the success of previous years, this year’s joint conference aims to promote collaboration among educators in the K-16 online Chinese teaching and learning community.
This year’s theme is Teaching and Learning Chinese online. We are pleased to have gathered several experts in this field who will share how they have responded to the current pandemic, highlighting their successful shifts from face-to-face to online teaching.

The 1st Online Chinese Teaching Forum & Workshop
The College of Education at Michigan State University is pleased to announce that the first Online Chinese Teaching Forum was held at Michigan State University on December 4th-5th, 2015. This forum aims at promoting the collaboration and communication among educators in K-12 online Chinese teaching and learning field. The forum will focus on discussing topics around online Chinese teaching modes and curriculum development. The mission of this forum is to establish a network for all K-12 online Chinese course providers that are currently offered in the United States. We are now inviting administrators and instructors who are involved in online Chinese courses to participate and present at the forum.
The theme of the forum is Online Chinese Teaching Modes and Approaches. Mr. Jamey Fitzpatrick, the current President and Chief Executive Officer at Michigan Virtual University, provided a keynote speech on the topic of “Online language education in the future: Policy and practices”. The morning session focused on introducing various models of online Chinese course and the existing affordances and challenges that online Chinese course providers are facing. The afternoon session was for online Chinese instructors to share instructional strategies and useful technologies to better facilitate online teaching and learning.

Mr. Jamey Fitzpatrick, President and CEO, Michigan Virtual University
Jamey Fitzpatrick, President and CEO, Michigan Virtual University® (MVU®), has served as a catalyst for change and a champion of innovation in public education. As both an education and technology policy advocate, Mr. Fitzpatrick provides leadership for MVU, a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. MVU operates the Michigan Virtual School® (MVS®). MVU also operates Michigan LearnPort®, a web-based portal that provides online professional development programs for Michigan’s K-12 community, and the Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute™, a center for online learning research and innovation. Previously, Jamey served as the director of technology for the Michigan Department of Education. Mr. Fitzpatrick serves on the Board of Trustees for Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan.
The first Online Chinese Teacher Training Workshop was held at Michigan State University on December 5th, 2015. The workshop was specifically designed for instructors who are currently teaching or are interested in teaching online Chinese course in the United States. Participants had the opportunity to experience advanced technology (moving Robot) and how it is adopted in hybrid classroom settings. Participants also learned various instructional strategies and useful tools to improve online teaching and engage online learners.
