Open Position: Assistant Professor for Student Affairs in Higher Education

Slippery Rock University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Counseling and Development’s Student Affairs in Higher Education program at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2012.   Slippery Rock University is a mid-size public institution approximately 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh, PA. The Department of Counseling and Development offers master’s degree programs in Student Affairs in Higher Education, Community Counseling, and School Counseling, each of which is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Student Affairs in Higher Education Program is also consistent with C.A.S. standards for M.A. Student Affairs professional preparation programs.  Two full-time faculty direct this 48-credit, cohort based program that enrolls approximately 15 full-time students in each fall entering class.  Program faculty use a constructivist approach that emphasizes reflection and discussion, and they assist students in integrating theory with practice through case study methodology and fieldwork. Responsibilities:  Responsibilities include teaching three master’s level courses each semester, committee service and scholarly activity.  Courses may include (but are not limited to): Leadership and Managing Change in Student Affairs; Organizational Behavior in Higher Education; Higher Education Environments, Cultures, and Students; Introduction to Student Affairs; Social and Cultural Diversity; Research and Program Assessment; Student Affairs Practicum; and Student Affairs Internship.  The position includes the possibility of undergraduate teaching.  Other responsibilities include advising Student Affairs majors, coordinating Student Affairs program procedures and processes, and working on Department committees and projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Student Affairs and/or Higher Education.
  • Professional experience as a student affairs practitioner.
  • Demonstrated clear research agenda.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the education of diverse populations.
  • Successful performance in an on-campus interview, including teaching demonstration.
  • Perceived ability to work productively with students and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience at the university level.
  • Involvement in appropriate professional organizations is preferred.
