The Program: Leadership Studies is an interdisciplinary master’s and doctoral program encompassing higher education, nonprofit leadership and management, organizational leadership and consulting, PK-12 public/private school leadership, and an individualized study option. USD was the first university in the nation to offer a doctoral program in leadership studies. Since its inception in 1979, this program has awarded approximately 350 doctoral degrees and remains one of the most prominent programs for mid-career students from a broad array of professional backgrounds who seek to deepen their leadership capacity. The Leadership Studies Program is seeking a candidate with the knowledge, skills, experience, and commitment to work primarily within the Leadership Studies Higher Education/Student Affairs specialization at both the master’s and doctoral levels; this includes supervising dissertations, theses, and action-research projects. Specific requirements for the position include:

  • An earned doctorate from a nationally recognized university (by date of appointment) in higher education/college student personnel/student affairs or area directly related to student affairs;
  • Experience teaching at the postsecondary level; and
  • Demonstrated research skills and the ability to articulate a coherent research agenda.

Position Description: The successful candidate will be expected to (1) teach and mentor both master’s and doctoral students in our higher education specialization with an emphasis on student affairs; (2) have a demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student populations; (3) conduct research and scholarly activities; (4) actively participate on dissertation committees, master’s theses, and action-research projects; (5) participate collaboratively in program development including non-traditional delivery systems; and (6) participate in university service. In addition to these qualifications, the ideal candidate would also have real-world experience in student affairs, be able to make immediate contributions in the area of dissertation advising, and have a research agenda that includes working with either under-represented or international communities. This is a nine month appointment and summer teaching opportunities are typically available.
