Coordinator for Challenge Course Programs: Loyola University Chicago

Summary: The Coordinator of Challenge Course Programs assists the Program Director, to administer, coordinate, implement, and supervise intentionally designed experiences for students, faculty and staff. This position oversees the management and operation of the Challenge Course at the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus. This position hires, trains, supervises and supports the 20+ student staff that deliver programming for Loyola University community members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Challenge Course

  • Develop, maintain and ensure compliance of policies and procedures for Challenge Course programming
  • Develop, create, and facilitate custom teambuilding workshops to fit the learning outcomes for various departmental groups, and campus programs
  • Oversees staff hiring, training, evaluation, supervision and on-going staff development
  • Supervise O.E.E. Graduate Assistant
  • Work with Retreat and Ecology Campus Challenge Course Coordinator to ensure the execution of shared policies and procedures
  • Perform administrative duties such as scheduling, completing program reports, marketing, equipment purchasing, incident reports, and other documentation
  • Manage partner invoicing and financial reconciliation of all challenge course related expenses
  • Oversee care and maintenance of equipment
  • Develop on-campus facilitation programming, marketing, and professional develop opportunities
  • Manage student payroll. Includes tracking overall payroll expenses and overseeing payroll requirements for new hires and promotions
  • Track challenge course budget and provide regular reports to the Program Director

Administrative Duties

  • Provides logistical support and serve as an emergency contact for O.E.E. trips and programs
  • Serve as a member of the LUREC Challenge Course risk management committee
  • Assist with office responsibilities including assessment, finances, web site development, marketing, and answering phones
  • Assist with the coordination of registrations and information dissemination for all O.E.E. programming
  • Assist the Program Director with the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures

General Duties:

  • Assist in designing, implementing, and the delivery of O.E.E. and Rock Wall events
  • Represent the office at various campus, division, and community functions, as assigned
  • Provide high quality customer service as part of the Campus Recreation Staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education: Master’s Degree (preferred) in Student Affairs, Recreation, Education, Environmental Studies or related field with 1-2 years work experience (graduate assistantships included), Bachelors Degree in Education, Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field required.

Experience: Challenge course facilitation with a variety of populations; previous experience working within a university outdoor program is preferred; technical proficiency in either climbing, caving, or vertical rescue; developing and implementing staff training and development. The candidate should have a desire to work in a student affairs environment. Programming experience at the collegiate level and an appreciation of Jesuit values and traditions is preferred.

Licenses: A valid driver’s license

Certifications:

  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED training and certification (preferred)
  • ACCT Challenge Course Manager Certification (preferred)
  • AMGA or PCIA climbing certifications (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current trends in challenge course technology and programming
  • Knowledge of experiential education, student development, and outdoor education theory
  • Knowledge of equipment/supplies purchasing
  • Knowledge of computers and related software
  • Skilled at teaching and presenting
  • Skilled at mentoring undergraduate student leaders
  • Ability to facilitate personal and group development through initiatives and low/high challenge course events
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies
  • Ability to organize and manage tasks
  • Ability to effectively communicate both in writing and orally
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate recreational programs and activities at a collegiate level

  • Availability to work flexible shifts, evenings and weekends as needed

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Work may involve the performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined space, lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds), lifting gear/kayaks, hiking with 40 lbs backpack, climbing, and exposure to heights. The work environment may involve exposure to various elements such as chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, or dampness, where work exposes the employee to potentially non-disabling injuries. Duties may require that work be performed in adverse weather conditions. Work may require exposure to dangerous equipment and machinery requiring the use of protective clothing or gear.
