Spring 2018 Mentored Teaching Apprenticeship: EAD 315: Student Leadership Training

September 26, 2017

Participate in a mentored teaching apprenticeship this spring!

Course Description
EAD 315 is a three-credit, pass/no pass course for undergraduate students. Curriculum topics include leadership theories, leadership skills, self-awareness and efficacy, communication, diversity, interculturalism, ethics, teamwork, and group dynamics. Course facilitators are encouraged to utilize both experiential and discussion-based learning that enables students to practice and reflect on the leadership dispositions and skills addressed during the semester.

Mentored Teaching Experience Description

Because EAD 315 is a teaching apprenticeship, regular feedback, training, and support for facilitators is provided before they begin teaching and throughout the semester. Facilitators work closely with a HALE faculty member and a HALE doctoral student who jointly oversee the administration of the course.

Training dates in the fall and professional development meetings in the spring are part of the apprenticeship experience. Currently, training dates are scheduled for Tuesday, December 12 and Thursday, December 14 from 9am-3pm. Monthly professional development meetings will be scheduled at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester.

The two potential textbooks to be used in the course are listed below. Facilitators choose one of these textbooks and use it as a framework for the course. Facilitators are also responsible for creating a syllabus (from a template) and lesson plans (templates available):

  • The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for an Exemplary Leader (2nd Edition) by Kouzes & Posner
  • Leadership for a Better World: Understanding the Social Change Model of Leadership Development by Komives & Wagner

To enhance the learning experience for both students and facilitators, sections are generally team-taught, although PhD students may teach individually. Facilitators are encouraged to identify their own teaching partners, but assistance with locating a teaching partner may be provided upon request. However, please reach out in advance of the application due date!

Facilitating EAD 315 can be used as part of your degree program plan. Graduate students interested in obtaining practicum or field experience credit should speak with their advisor.

This is an unpaid position; however, some professional development funds are provided.
