Family engagement/parent involvement in teacher preparation is fast becoming an important competitive advantage in teacher preparation programs. The purpose of this course is to explore the policy, theoretical, pedagogical, and research issues pertaining to family engagement and parent involvement. It is recommended for doctoral students pursuing the Specialization in Language and Literacy in the College of Education. Other doctoral students with a strong interest in literacy research are also encouraged to take this course. You will read articles and books related to a variety of literacy topics. You are expected to critically think about texts and participate in class discussions in order to analyze, synthesize, and build texts, and to begin to identify your own area(s) of family engagement/parent involvement.
