EAD 972: International Comparative Higher Education
HALE South Korea Global Higher Education Class
South Korea is considered a great economic and cultural power. The country benefits from a highly skilled workforce and is among the most highly educated countries in the world, with one of the highest percentages of its citizens holding a tertiary education degree.
The purpose of the South Korea global higher education class and experiences is to provide graduate students with an opportunity to understand how local, national, and global forces interact in shaping the East Asian higher education landscape and the role of South Korea in East Asian higher education. At the end of this course, students will:
- Develop a nuanced understanding of how local, national, regional, and global forces shape the South Korean higher education landscape with particular attention to faculty careers and experiences;
- Develop analytical skills for analyzing higher education and the academic profession through local, national, and global scales;
- Develop a critical awareness of one’s social positionality (i.e. memberships in various social groups) within transnational relations of unequal power in the context of HE), particularly concerning questions around knowledge production and evaluation.
Important Details:
- Tentative Dates: Depart on Friday, May 15th and return on Saturday, May 23rd 2020.
- Class participation involves pre- and post-travel work.
- A portion of the costs associated with travel will be covered by the HALE Center.
- The class is open to any SAA MA, HALE MA, or HALE PhD student.

- If accepted, students must enroll in Spring EAD 972: International Comparative Higher Education, which is a three-credit course.
