Research Mentor Training

Based upon an internationally recognized evidence-based mentoring training curriculum, this workshop is designed to provide participants with some of the most important skills and ideas required for high-level mentoring of undergraduate or graduate students in a research environment. This will be an ideal, in-depth professional development experience for graduate students or postdocs who will be mentoring research assistants over the summer months. Graduate students and postdocs will have the opportunity to come learn about (and share) best practices in mentoring research assistants. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share strategies about the most effective way to both provide students with an excellent learning experience and get their own work done. Ph.D. Career Parade: Being a Government Scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Tim Shafer, Ph.D., earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacology and environmental toxicology from Michigan State University in 1991. Tim started working as a postdoctoral fellow at EPA in August 1991, and is currently developing high-throughput screening methods for neurotoxicity and developmental neurotoxicity. In this talk, he will share his insights on the shift from his academic world–graduate student at MSU to a post doc at the EPA–and what it’s like working as a scientist in a government lab. This talk is ideal for any graduate students who are interested in careers in doing science in different domains, as well as anyone interested in the environment, government science and science policy, and other fields. Certification in College Teaching Institute (2-day program)

This intensive program that will help fulfill the workshop portion of the requirements for the MSU CCTP. Over the course of two days, featured speakers will focus on teaching with technology, assessing student learning outcomes, creating effective learning environments through writing, and developing teaching portfolios for different kinds of academic institutions. Through a combination of interactive group sessions and focused breakouts, you will gain skills in core competency areas of the Certification, plan a mentored teaching project, and develop the template for your final portfolio. The CCTP culminates in the preparation of an e-portfolio that will help participants prepare for academic job interviews and plan for their professional development as early career faculty.
Registration fee: $20
