This Graduate Assistantship is housed in the MSU Graduate School and will support the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Program including Orientation and Training in August 2021 and ongoing teaching professional development as well as assessment and research as it relates.
Appointment
Half-time graduate assistantship (GA) starting in Spring 2021 – Fall 2021 (20 hours/week). Level and stipend based on previous experience.
Job summary
The Graduate School is hiring a GA starting in Spring Semester 2021 to support graduate teaching and professional development through facilitating program activities, co-leading workshops, curating resources, updating program content and communicating content and professional development to Graduate Teaching Assistants. Assessment of program activities, conducting needs assessment and collecting feedback as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis with opportunities for publications will also be part of the position. The GA will share pedagogy knowledge with broad audiences and assist in developing capacity of the office to support graduate students in pursuing their teaching related career goals. In addition, the GA will manage communication for relevant events and resources via social media, newsletters, and other communication strategies.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop a deep understanding of a variety of evidence-based practices in teaching development available to doctoral students
- Assist in planning and implementing workshops and other events for teaching
- Co-manage office social media accounts, announcements, website updates and other communication
- Provide general administrative support for the office
- Work closely with other programs at the Graduate School to collaborate, build programs, and enhance capacity for work in these areas.
- Assist with qualitative and quantitative data analyses and write
Required qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in graduate student teaching and professional development
- Currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds within and outside academia (in person, over email, and over the phone)
- Understanding of issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education and interest in research in this area
- Strong writing skills; able to draft email correspondences, newsletter and social media text, and other communications for audiences of graduate students and community partners
- Public speaking and presentation skills
*For the 2021 year, we anticipate that some of this work will be done virtually. Candidates must have access to technology that allows them to work remotely.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge and awareness of best practices in college level teaching that spans various fields
- Familiarity with MSU Graduate School programs, resources, and priorities
- Qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis skills
- Appreciation of an interdisciplinary university environment
- Technology skills including Zoom, Teams, Microsoft 365 tools and interest in learning new platforms
- Experience and willingness to contribute to the social media presence of Teaching Professional Development
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and part of a team, strong communication skills, and creative problem solving.
