Colloquium Description

Dr. John Hernandez has spent his higher education career serving students since his first position as an outreach student ambassador to his current role as President of Irvine Valley College. In this Raines Colloquium, Dr. Hernandez will describe his leadership journey from student affairs to a college presidency highlighting the ways his student services background prepared him for the role of president. Dr. Hernandez will discuss what it means to have a “seat at the table” and how to use your voice to influence within your organizational structure. Additionally, President Hernandez will discuss the critical role of community colleges in preparing students, particularly the most diverse and equity impacted students, with the knowledge and background necessary to compete in today’s global economy.

Speaker Biography

Dr. John Hernandez was appointed President of Irvine Valley College (IVC) in July 2020. He has been an educator for over 30 years—22 of those years in administration. He served as President of Santiago Canyon College (SCC) in Orange, CA for four years and prior to that was SCC’s vice president of student services for 11 years. He has been in leadership roles at both 2- and 4-year institutions and has served as Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at Cal Poly Pomona; Associate Dean for Student Development at Santa Ana College; and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at California State University, Fullerton. Additionally, Dr. Hernandez has taught in the Student Development in Higher Education graduate program at California State University, Long Beach.

Dr. Hernandez earned his Ph.D. in College Student Personnel Administration from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree in Counseling from CSU Long Beach, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from CSU Fullerton. He earned an associate in arts degree at Fullerton College.

As a first-generation immigrant who is the product of the California community college system, Dr. Hernandez knows first-hand the impact of a college education. His educational journey was positively shaped as an EOP&S student at Fullerton College and is a living testament of how lives are transformed through education.
