Announcement of College of Edcuation
Doctoral Student Fellowship
Enhancing International Collaborations in Higher Education

Application form and information

I (Julie Sinclair) serve as the Associate Director of International Studies in the College of Education. For the 2021-2022 academic year, I will be part of the Lilly Fellows cohort https://aan.msu.edu/teaching-learning/lilly-fellowship/ The Lilly Fellowship, run by MSU’s Academic Advancement Network, is a program to enhance teaching, learning, and educational activities at MSU.  Each fellow proposes a project as part of their fellowship experience. I proposed to create a doctoral student fellows program around enhancing interational collaborations.

MSU engages in a variety of international collaborations that impact not only the research but also the educational missions of the institution. However, scholars have noted a need to provide greater preparation for our doctoral students to prepare for a variety of international collaborations they may engage in as future faculty and administrators.  Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly changed the way we were able to do our work individually, within our colleges and units, and as an institution, shifting to a nearly all virtual environment. International engagement of all types suddenly became virtual, requiring us to rethink how we do that work.  Although the shift to virtual environments has caused many challenges, it has also been a time to think creatively about virtual international engagement and how it is likely to become a continuing part of our future educational activities. I believe this creates an even stronger need to systematically think about and build resources to support our colleagues, students, academic units, and the broader university to engage in international collaborations.

Eligibility

Doctoral students who are in good academic standing in any College of Education doctoral program and can demonstrate satisfactory progress toward their degree are eligible to apply.  Students must be enrolled in both the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters to be eligible for this fellowship.

Requirements of the fellowship

Requirements include participating in monthly seminars (two seminars in fall 2021 and three in spring 2022) and working together as a cohort to create a resource related to good practice in international collaborations that will be shared with the broader College of Education and MSU community. The group will also share its work with the College of Education in a showcase held in the late spring 2022. Monthly seminar topics may include the following: interdisciplinary international collaborations, constraints and opportunities for faculty involvement in international collaborations, collabroations in international research and outreach, institutional supports and barriers to international collaborations, etc. The types of resources created will be decided upon by the group.

Fellowship Amount

Award amount: $2000 ($1000 per semester, for two semesters).  The first part of the award will be in the fall 2021 semester and the second part in spring 2022.  (Note that awarding of the second portion of the funding is dependent on completion of satisfactory work done during the first period.)
