Do you do research about pressing topics in or inspired by your work context? As a full-time staff member are you also writing a dissertation, doing course-related projects, or trying to get to that writing project you keep on the back burner? Do you ever feel like it’s hard to engage in scholarship that isn’t part of your “day job”? Or, are you a full-time PhD student looking for opportunities to apply your learning to practice, and gain experience in a mentorship capacity?
If you would like to join other practitioner-scholars to get support for and advance your work, we invite you to join a new MSU practitioner-scholar community.
As part of Dr. Kris Renn’s activities as Dr. Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education, she is focusing on a key aspect of MSU’s core identity as a land-grant university: Using research to solve real-world problems*. Many of you do so on a regular basis, applying scholarly approaches to your practice in higher education as we seek to make MSU a more inclusive institution that promotes success and well-being for students and employees.
If you are interested, please go to this link and complete a short (5-10 minute) survey about what kinds of research you are — or would like to be — doing and what activities you would like to participate in. It could be deeply engaged (e.g., writing groups, coaching/mentoring, research funding opportunities) or more casual (an occasional group lunch, receiving a monthly newsletter about practitioner-scholar activities).
Please contact Kris (renn@msu.edu) or HALE PhD student Brandon Smith (brgsmith@msu.edu) with any questions.
