“Identity Capitalism in Academia–Implications for Women Faculty and Epistemic Possibilities”
Gonzales, Gong, and Miao will share emergent findings from an ongoing project focused on the persistent failure to create a more diverse and inclusive academic profession. Based on an extensive review of literature stemming from countries around the world, the team argues that—despite their growing presence— women academics and their work, particularly Women of Color academics, are commodified, undervalued, and kept on the margins of the academy. To make sense of the findings, the team adopted and adapted Leong’s theory of identity capitalism to account for the colonial nature of identity markers that drive the bulk of diversity efforts within the higher education landscape. The team will conclude by pairing insights from the organizational change literature with Leong’s work to sketch out what can be done to facilitate not only diversification, but inclusion and transformation of the academic profession. The project may be of interest to those committed to addressing racialized and gendered conditions within the global academic profession.
