We are very excited to announce that the Psychology Department is looking to add an additional advisor to our fun and exciting office!  If you (or someone you know) is looking to work in an office that is creative, supportive, and works as a strong team, this might be the right place!!  We advise PSY students from NSO through graduation, teach undergraduate courses, run internship programs, coordinate graduate school and career events, assist with student groups, and continue to create new ways to support our students. We have a virtual office for students as well as an in-person office, so we have some remote flexibility.

Position Summary

The Undergraduate Programs and Advising Office in the Department of Psychology is seeking applicants for a new Academic Advisor position. The advisor is responsible for academic advising for a shared caseload of about 1900 students. Advising responsibilities will include:

• Holistic and proactive advising to assist students from 1st year through graduation.

• Attendance at university, college, and department level trainings, meetings, and functions.

• Supporting student success initiatives and assisting struggling and probationary students.

• Participating in new student orientation sessions throughout the year for first year and transfer students.

• Assisting the PSY internship program through placement exploration, course development and management, student recruitment, resume and orientation workshops, and course teaching.

• Coordinating and planning programs that enrich the student experience such as graduate school events, career exploration workshops, tutoring programs, time management, resume building, and many others.

• Using information technology to support students including MSU’s advising and student information systems, University/College/Department websites, Microsoft Office and Teams, Google Docs, and Zoom.

• Conducting degree audits for graduating seniors, maintaining accurate records, and monitoring student progress on a regular basis.

• Participating with the PSY scholarship committee and other committee work as assigned.

• Consultation with psychology administrators and advisors when issues arise to keep communication open.

• Advise and mentor students within the department’s student groups.

• Participating as a team player and desires to be in a fast-paced and high-energy environment where the goal is to support students in every way we can.

• Contributing to a supportive and inclusive environment where all students and colleagues feel respected, valued, and supported.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in student affairs administration, psychology, counseling, or other related field. 
  • Ability to work independently while functioning as a member of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • The ability to retain a high volume of programmatic, academic, college, and university related information while having that ability to critically think through complex situations.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to learn quickly) University, College, and Psychology academic policies and procedures.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and monitor deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to use new and existing technologies to manage data and communicate with students including working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms. 
  • Ability to develop trust, rapport, and positive working relationships with diverse students, staff, and faculty.
  • Strong personal desire to support the unit’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a college academic setting preferred.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Friendly and personable when working with students, staff, and faculty. Academic advising experience preferred.
