Broad College Summer Advising Practicum

Description of Practicum Experience
The Broad College of Business Undergraduate Academic Services unit is seeking summer
practicum students to assist with the academic advising services and enrollment activities of
business preference students at Broad summer New Student Orientation (NSO).

Business preference students seek admission to the Broad College through a secondary
admission pathway that is limited enrollment and competitive. First year course selection
includes general education, admission pre-core, and elective courses.

The proposed practicum will aid those exploring or entering the field of academic advising in
advancing one’s knowledge of the field and securing direct academic advising experience.

Expanding academic advising support for students is critical in promoting student success and
retention.

Practicum Learning Outcomes
• Students will understand academic advising approaches, strategies, and expected
outcomes. (C4, C5)
• Students will understand how equitable and inclusive environments are created and
maintained. (C6)
• Students will apply a holistic, systems, legal, and evidence-based approach to advising.
o Students will learn curriculum, degree programs, academic requirements, and
options. (I2)
o Students will learn MSU & Broad College specific policies, procedures, rules, and
regulations. (I3)
o Students will learn legal guidelines of advising practice including privacy
regulations and confidentiality. (I4)
o Students will learn characteristics, needs, and experiences of major and
emerging student populations. (I5)
o Students will learn campus and community resources that support student
success. (I6)
o Students will learn information technology applicable to relevant advising roles.

• Students will demonstrate essential skills for academic advising.
o Students will practice rapport and building academic advising relationships. (R2)
o Students will practice communicating in an inclusive and respectful manner. (R3)
o Students will practice planning and conducting successful advising interactions.

o Students will practice promoting student understanding of the logic and purpose
of the curriculum. (R5)
o Students will practice facilitating problem solving, critical thinking, decisionmaking, meaning-making, planning, and goal setting. (R6)
o Students will practice the ability to discuss and clarify educational, career, and
personal goals. (R6)
o Students will practice referrals to educational, institutional, and community
resources and activities (I6)
o Students will practice current technology for delivery of academic advising
information (I7)
• Students will be able to articulate a personal philosophy of academic advising. (R1)

Practicum Duties
• Provide one-on-one academic advising for new to MSU, business preference students
o Review degree requirements and competitive admission process
o Advise students on the selection of appropriate courses
o Begin the conversation of extra and co-curricular educational experiences
o Refer students to campus resources & programs to address educational, career,
or personal concerns, or skill or learning deficiencies to other resources and
programs on a campus
• Assist academic advising staff with orientation
• Assist students with enrollment via Campus Solutions
