Discover how to develop, facilitate, and create meaningful experiential learning opportunities for students by participating in a study abroad program through the NIU College of Education and Department of Counseling and Higher Education. Through this program, you will have the opportunity to learn about the educational system in Mexico, visit with local community members, participate in a volunteer project, and connect with Human Connections staff to discuss responsible tourism in education abroad and supporting student learning.
Course fee ($2,420) includes tuition (3 credits), hotel, most meals, in country transportation, fair compensation for community partners, and administrative fees.
The course will span 5-weeks with one week spent in Bucerías, Mexico. While abroad, you will:

- Learn about Entreamigos, a transformative community center in San Pancho, focused on community, education, and the environment
- Visit with local artisans to gain deeper insights into their livelihoods, personal histories, and culture
- Meet with administrators and faculty from the Centro Universitario de la Costa to gain insight into the Mexican higher educational system
- Connect with Human Collections Global Interns (undergraduate students) to discuss their internship experiences and learning
- Explore Bucerías and other famed beach towns like Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta
- Practice facilitating small group reflections on activities and experiences
Throughout the course, we will be exploring the question: How can we engage in study abroad practices that are socially just, culturally responsible, and promote reflexive practices?
While the course focuses on study abroad, many of the concepts we will discuss about facilitating experiential learning are applicable to other types of engaged and hands on learning.
