Careers in Student Affairs Month Call for Submissions
10/1/2018 – 10/31/2018

About Careers in Student Affairs Month

Careers in Student Affairs (CSAM) is a month-long initiative, each October. CSAM is dedicated to the celebration of a career in student affairs, education and awareness in the profession, and engagement with professional associations and peers in the field. More directly, the goals of Careers in Student Affairs Month are to:

Celebrate the field of student affairs through opportunities to reflect on individual journeys and experiences Provide professional development for student affairs administrators in higher education Encourage and promote the profession in order to grow the field of student affairs
Cultivate spaces for dialogue related to pertinent topics within student affairs

This year, the theme for #CSAM18 is Magnify Your Lens.  As our communities both on and off campus have changed over the past 100 years, the field has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of not just students, but our country as whole. Careers in Student Affairs Month (CSAM) 2018 will explore the ways that college and universities have affected and impacted their communities from the local level to the national stage.

During #CSAM18, NASPA will be providing various free professional development opportunities for student affairs administrators on their respective campuses. These include the following:

  • Live briefings on relevant topics throughout the month
  • A blog series from all professional levels in student affairs via the Student Affairs Collective (SAC)
  • Weekly #SAChat on Twitter with SAC every Thursday
  • A weekday photo challenge

We invite you to submit a blog for the blog series or proposal for a live briefing!

FAQs on Live Briefings

What are live briefings?

Live briefings are similar to webinars, in that they have a live portion that is delivered to a virtual audience. However, coupled with the Online Learning Community’s learning management system (LMS), we are able to expand the experience to include pre- and post-session materials, forums, and guided questions. The live portions, which generally last about 60 minutes, are recorded and made available for viewing after the live session has concluded.

For either live briefings or OnDemand modules, we expect the average learner to spend roughly 1.5-2 hours with the material, including live content.

What kind of technology do you use for presentations?

NASPA uses GoToWebinar for most of our live presentations. We have a RingCentral meeting room capable of accommodating up to 100 participants if a more face-to-face style of presentation is required. A NASPA staff member will work with presenters to determine which platform will be used for the session. Our Learning Management System is Matrix LMS, which is similar to Blackboard.

Do I need to have familiarity with any of these systems in order to be a presenter?

No. A NASPA staff member will walk you through the entire process, and will be present for your live session as well. We will schedule at least one 30 minute session to do a technical run-through of the platforms your session will use.

What is required of me as a presenter?

Depending on whether you are doing a live briefing or recording an OnDemand module, the requirements will be slightly different, although the time commitment will be about the same.
Live briefings: You will work with NAPSA staff to select a date and time for your live session. We require all material related to the promotion of the session to be turned in 4 weeks before the live session date. At least one 30 minute orientation will be scheduled to acquaint you with the platforms your session will use.

Priority deadline to be considered is Friday, August 24, 2018. Final deadline is September 7, 2018.
